Norwegian producer Hasta (real name Thomas Wesenlund Wahl) might only be a 19-year old, but he is already a force to be reckoned with. He co-produced Goldlink’s break out 2015 track, ‘Dance On Me’ and is from the same Norwegian camp as Cashmere Cat. His sound - a dark, ambient twist on hip-hop and trap beat-making - stems from a love of two very different, contrasting musical spheres; jazz and Norwegian black metal. It’s these unusual musical reference points that immediately set him apart from producers working in a similar lane.
With a series of notable remixes also under his belt, including an edit of Norwegian band Highasakite’s ‘Someone Who’ll Get It’ that has amassed well over 100,000 streams, Hasta is working on a slew of new material - the first of which arrives in the form of new single, ‘Urge’, featuring London-based trio Ritual and Cal.
“Basically, I had this old instrumental simply called ‘Demo’ just sat in my beats folder”, explains Hasta. “Now at that time, the tune sounded completely different than what it does now. I figured it could be cool to have some lush vocals on it, since the tune is quite mellow and calm, and I thought RITUAL would be a perfect fit.”
Boosted by contrasting vocals from both RITUAL and Cal, Hasta’s spacious, trapped-out beat and floaty, dreamscape melodies come to the fore on ‘Urge’ - an intriguing window into where Hasta is headed throughout the remainder of 2016.
